It’s been a while since I last wrote anything that wasn’t just a quick thought tossed into the void of Soundcloud. June is hitting hard, all humidity and cicadas buzzing like a broken record. It feels…heavy. Not in a dramatic way, not yet anyway. More like a low-grade pressure, the kind you carry when you're trying to build something from absolutely nothing.
The months after dropping out – March, April, May, June of last year – they were a blur of late nights and ramen. I was chasing ghosts, honestly. Ghosts of ambition, ghosts of certainty. It wasn’t about failing school; it was about failing *myself*, that feeling like I was supposed to be further along, doing more, *being* more. The doubt crept in slow, like a weed through cracked concrete, wrapping around my ankles until I couldn't move forward.
I started making beats again, of course. It’s what keeps me anchored. Those late nights weren’t spent wrestling with the void; they were spent layering 808s, tweaking hi-hat patterns, trying to find a rhythm that matched the way my own heart was beating – or, more accurately, *didn't* beat, sometimes. Posting those tracks online felt like shouting into a canyon, hoping someone – anyone – would hear me.
It wasn’t about the views, not really. It was about showing up. About proving to myself that I hadn’t completely disappeared. That there was still something pushing out of me, even if it was just noise. I kept going to those studio sessions, grinding on tracks, like a mechanic working on a broken engine – hoping for a spark, a sign that things could finally run again.
Then September hit. A small placement, a track on some local rapper's EP. Six hundred dollars. It wasn’t a fortune, but it felt…significant. Like a tiny crack of light in all the darkness. I remember staring at that bank deposit notification, almost feeling sick with relief. It didn't erase the doubt completely, not by a long shot, but it shifted something. It confirmed, maybe just for a little while, that I was heading in the right direction.
I started paying attention to the details again – the way the vinyl crackled on my turntable, the colors of the city reflected in the rain, the subtle shifts in a melody. Those small things felt important, grounding. It's funny how the smallest validation can reshape your entire perspective.
Now, I’m not saying it’s all sunshine and rainbows. There are still days when the doubt comes back, stronger than before. But there’s also this…steadiness. This slow-building confidence that maybe, just maybe, this whole chasing-a-dream thing isn't as impossible as it felt a few months ago.
I’m learning to appreciate the quiet moments – the ones where I don’t need to be *doing* anything, just *being*. It’s not about reaching some grand destination; it’s about finding joy in the journey itself. And honestly, that feels like enough, for now.
