They squint at the picture, their tongues sticking out a little, and start with these tentative lines, unsure of what it *is* before they know how to draw it. It's always fascinating to watch them slowly build that knowledge, piece by piece. I just read something about brains doing kind of the same thing, only…with sight.
Apparently, scientists have found that when we learn to recognize a new object – a new kind of flower, a specific type of car, even a particularly weird-shaped rock – it actually changes how our brains process *everything* we see. Not in a big, obvious way. It’s subtle. Like adding just a pinch more salt to the gravy. You don't notice it immediately, but eventually, everything tastes different.
It makes sense, I guess. We used to think of perception as this stable thing – a camera recording reality perfectly. But my grandma always said nothing stays the same. She’d point at her rose bushes, blooming and then fading, year after year. It's comforting in some ways to think about that consistency in our visual world; it lets us navigate familiar places.
