But what if a whole lot of learning isn't something we impart at all? What if it’s already humming along inside them, waiting for the right conditions to bloom? I’ve been thinking a lot about that lately, especially as my niece gets older – she just turned two last month and her world is expanding so rapidly.
I read an interesting piece of research recently that has really reinforced this feeling; it suggests that even very young infants are remarkably adept at filtering out background noise to zero in on speech. It's not just about hearing sounds, but *where* those sounds are coming from. They’re using spatial cues – the direction and distance a voice travels – to prioritize what they hear.
It makes perfect sense when you really stop and consider it. Think of trying to have a conversation at the farmers market on Ludlow last Sunday. The music, the chattering crowds, the occasional goat bleating from Mr. Henderson’s stall…it's overwhelming! But even amidst all that chaos, we manage to pick out individual voices—our children asking for berries, a friend calling our name across the square.
