Not just as parents – although managing a small, energetic pack does certainly bring that into sharp focus – but as humans, fundamentally driven by impulses older than language or reasoning. It’s a humbling thought, really, especially when you're trying to explain something like frustration tolerance to a seven-year-old who *really* wants the last blueberry muffin.

I read this fascinating piece of research recently about aggression in mice, and it circled back to that feeling of underlying instinct. Scientists have identified a specific circuit in the mouse brain – a tiny network of cells – that seems largely responsible for triggering physical aggression. It’s connected to areas involved in processing threat and responding to stress. The interesting part? Stimulating this circuit makes even docile mice lash out.

It's easy, I suppose, to dismiss it as ‘just mice,’ but the implications feel surprisingly resonant when you consider how often humans escalate situations unnecessarily. That simmering tension before a parent-teacher conference, or the quickening pulse and raised voices during a fender bender – are those also rooted in something simpler, older, perhaps even unintentionally triggered? It doesn’t excuse bad behavior, of course, but it offers a little bit more context.
